(Especially when you’re running everything at work and at home)
For women who are leading teams, households, businesses, or board meetings (and many times a combination of these), the idea of taking a pause might feel laughable and way too ideal, like it’s something other people do. But a mid‑year review is more than just a productivity tool. It’s a personal reset. A chance to ask: Is this still working for me? Am I still moving in the right direction?
This type of review is not indulgent. It’s essential!
The Power of a Mid-Year Check-In (at work and at home)
Take a look at these numbers (to bring home the point if you don’t want to take it from little old me)
-
96% of employees want more frequent feedback and reflection, not just an annual check-in. (ClearCompany)
-
Only 13% say annual reviews alone help them improve. Without mid-year alignment, we risk drifting.
-
52% of working women report feeling burned out, and more than 40% say they’re constantly “on.” (McKinsey Women in the Workplace Report)
This burnout doesn’t only show up on Zooms rooms and in office meetings. It spills into rushed school drop-offs, skipped workouts, late-night laundry, and the quiet moments where we wonder if we’ve lost ourselves in the busyness of it all.
So What Happens If You Don’t Pause?
Let’s be honest: when we don’t reflect, we keep running…but to where? We keep running just to run, to stay in motion. But we tend to lose direction, and then our sense of purpose starts to wander off.
-
You get things done but feel detached from what matters.
-
You serve everyone else but forget your own needs.
-
You’re surviving on caffeine and calendar reminders, but your joy and clarity? Nowhere to be found.
Without intentional check-ins, it’s easy to drift into autopilot – reactive, depleted – and wondering how it’s already July.
How to Do a Mid-Year Review (That Honors All of You)
Here’s a simple framework that doesn’t just check in on your goals, but on your well-being, something I place a great emphasis on in my work and personal life.
1. Block off time
Schedule a 30–45 minute solo date with yourself. Coffee, journal, quiet. Think of it like a strategic meeting with you as the CEO of your life.
2. Reflect holistically
Use prompts like:
-
What am I most proud of so far this year?
-
What’s been depleting my energy (work or personal)?
-
What brought me joy?
-
Where am I overcommitted or undernourished?
3. Check in on your values
Ask: Are my daily routines aligned with what I say I value? Or am I just reacting? (For example, if family, health, or creativity are values, how often do they show up in my week and on my calendar?)
4. Set micro-goals
Instead of massive overhauls, try:
-
One thing to do more of
-
One thing to do less of
-
One boundary to reinforce
-
One joy to schedule
5. Include your personal life in your strategy
If you’re planning Q3 work goals, also plan:
-
A personal day off
-
A catch-up with someone you love
-
A moment of rest you protect
Because your life is the foundation, your career is just one branch. It’s time we start envisioning the life we want and plug the career into it, rather than the other way around where we get the career and then try to make life fit into it some way, somehow.
Why This Matters More For Women
-
We are often the default caretakers and leaders, both at work and at home.
-
Our emotional labor is invisible but constant – scheduling the dentist, remembering birthdays, managing the activity and social calendars, noticing when a team member seems off, etc.
-
We don’t get many built-in pauses, so we have to create our own. And yes, you’re allowed to do this!
Without this mid-year moment, it’s too easy to pour and pour until we’re empty and then we wonder why our ambition feels like exhaustion rather than excitement.
Warning Signs You’re Due for a Check-In
-
You feel like you’re just “getting through the day”
-
You’ve stopped doing the small things that used to light you up
-
You’re moving fast…but unsure where it’s all going
If any of these sound familiar, a mid-year review isn’t a “nice to do.” It’s a lifeline.
